Waihohonu Hut – Historic (Flashback)

#4 – 16th March 2012

Located in the Tongariro National Park this is an amazing little hut of the past which has been left preserved and you can even go inside to take a look around.

It was built in 1904 and retired to its historic status on the completion of a new Waihohonu Hut in 1968.

Its historical significance is quite impressive on a number of fronts. The DOC website states that it is the oldest existing mountain hut in New Zealand and the first hut ever built in the Tongariro National Park. It remains on its original site.

Also, with a framing of totara cladded in corrugated iron, its quite unique on the building front too as it uses pumice infill as insulation.

It is listed as a category one historic place.
