Waitawheta Hut

#51 – 16th August 2015

This hut sleeps 26 in two separate bunkrooms. It has a really well set out living area, and a cozy wee central fire. The outside decking is great and catches the morning sun with long bench seating. The hut requires booking but is covered under the backcountry hut pass, and camping needn’t be booked.

Its located in a good sized clearing on the site of the old Waitawheta Sawmilling Company cookhouse with the site of the old logging mill about 2 minutes walk away. There are a great load of possums living about the hut area, and in the night the noise they manage to make would have you believe they are double their size! Lol!

Most popular access to the hut is via a 3hour walk in along the Waitawheta Tramway Track which is well formed with a lot of interesting history and relics along the way. You can also reach the hut from a hand-full of other tracks including from Mt Te Aroha, Waitengaue Stream Track, and the Wharawhara Tramway Track.

I spent 2 nights at this hut. The first night we shared the hut with a great bunch; Hamilton’s ‘Monday Bushwalkers’ who we had a great time chatting to and they made brilliant hut company. On night two my fiancée and I had the place to ourselves.
