Upper Whirinaki Hut

#53 – 23rd August 2015

Upper Whirinaki hut is a standard hut that holds 9 people in a three tier bunk stack. It has a cosy fire and kitchen and is all open plan.

It is located in the Te Urewera National Park along the Whirinaki Track. We reached it from Plateau Road end in 3 hours. It is a moderately confusing drive in to Plateau Road end through forestry roads and you need to get a permit for these. Alternatively you can enter the Whirinaki Track at the River Road end near SH 38.

Its located in a clearing that’s been ripped up a lot by pigs, which are everywhere! We saw a couple loitering about even during our stay. Based on the surrounding tracks as well, I think there is no reason that anyone within a fair sized radius need be without bacon.
