#30 – 30th December 2013
Theres no other way to describe it but that this hut is in a league of its own. It is set in amongst a surreal moonscape setting in the Tongariro National Park and has expansive views over the desert road area out to the Kaimanawas. Be prepared for an incredibly beautiful sunrise worth getting up for!
The hut holds 20 in two separate bunkrooms and a few more in the living area which is a good size with a good fire.
Perched at an altitude of 1556m it is the highest hut on Mt Ruapehu’s ‘Round The Mountain Track’, the lesser known but equally beautiful circuit in the park. The circuit can be completed in 4 – 6 days and is a showcase of the Mt Ruapehu landscape. It can also be easily accessed in a couple of hours from Tukino Skifield road, which is a 4 wheel drive road, but I did make it here in a 2 wheel drive vehicle to the point of the track.
I visited this hut the night before New Years Eve and shared it with a lovely couple. It was a showery walk in but I woke to a cracker sunrise before setting off further round the circuit.
I reeeeally don’t like to play favourites, but……. this hut could be ‘the one’ 🙂
